Using Wittgenstein ’ s family resemblance principle to learn exemplars

چکیده
The introduction of the notion of family resemblance represented a major shift in Wittgenstein’s thoughts on the meaning of words, moving away from a belief that words were well defined, to a view that words denoted less well defined categories of meaning. This paper presents the use of the notion of family resemblance in the area of machine learning as an example of the benefits that can accrue from adopting the kind of paradigm shift taken by Wittgenstein. The paper presents a model capable of learning exemplars using the principle of family resemblance and adopting Bayesian networks for a representation of exemplars. An empirical evaluation is presented on three data sets and shows promising results that suggest that previous assumptions about the way we categories needs reopening.

Probabilistic relational categories are learnable as long as you don’t know you’re learning probabilistic relational categories
Kittur, Hummel and Holyoak (2004) showed that people have great difficulty learning relation-based categories with a probabilistic (i.e., family resemblance) structure. We investigated three interventions hypothesized to facilitate learning family-resemblance based relational categories: Naming the relevant relations, providing a hint to look for a family resemblance structure, and changing the...
متن کاملTowards a Formal Account of Similarity and Family Resemblance for Technical Functions
According to [5], the best way to formalize the notion of technical function is to treat such a notion as a family resemblance concept. A family resemblance concept (the term is due to L. Wittgenstein) is characterized and understood in terms of a network of similarity relations that link the various members of the class. Essential to an analysis of the notion of family resemblance is therefore...

Many people have argued that natural categories are organized in terms of a family resemblance principle. Members of family resemblance categories tend to share properties with each other but have no properties that are singly necessary and jointly sufftcient (defining) for category membership. This paper reports seven experiments using a sorting task to evaluate the conditions under which peop...
متن کاملHumans and monkeys exert metacognitive control Based on learning difficulty in a PercePtual categorization task
Recently, Redford (2010) found that monkeys seemed to exert metacognitive control in a category-learning paradigm. Specifically, they selected more trials to view as the difficulty of the category-learning task increased. However, category-learning difficulty was determined by manipulating the family resemblance across the to-be-learned exemplars. Although this effectively influenced the learni...
متن کاملRevisiting Wittgenstein’s puzzle: hierarchical encoding and comparison facilitate learning of probabilistic relational categories
Kittur et al. (2004, 2006) and Jung and Hummel (2011, 2014) showed that people have great difficulty learning relation-based categories with a probabilistic (i.e., family resemblance) structure, in which no single relation is shared by all members of a category. Yet acquisition of such categories is not strictly impossible: in all these studies, roughly half the participants eventually learned ...
